Thesis (Ph.D.)--Saint Louis University, 1990.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the subject of employed women's sex role orientation, role conflicts, and coping strategies. The interrole conflicts included one of the five categories: work/home maintenance; work/parenting; work/spouse; work/other; and work/self-development. The researcher was concerned with not only the usage of varying coping strategies, but also the degree of variety of coping strategies employed. Sex role orientation (masculine, feminine, androgynous, undifferentiated) was measured by the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (Bem 1981). Coping strategies were measured by the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988).Subjects--Topical Terms:

Participants in the study consisted of employed women in the St. Louis area who were members of a professional women's organization. Two hundred twenty subjects were randomly selected and sent questionnaire packets. Returned responses of 119 made up the study's sample population.

The four hypotheses in the study were rejected. No significant differences were found between sex role orientation, choice of interrole conflict, and choice or use of coping strategies. Two statistical approaches were employed to examine variation on the usage of the various strategies. The first approach, a mixed model repeated measures analysis of variance, examined and compared the uses of the different strategies both within and between the sex-typed groups. The second approach was to compute the variance score for each subject by taking the variance across the eight measurements representing the eight coping strategies. The greater variance would indicate a greater variety of coping strategies employed.

The results of this study suggested that a woman's sex role orientation does not influence her choice of coping strategies within the five interrole areas. However, generalizations from this study are limited due to the characteristics of the sample. The women in the study were highly educated professional women. It is recommended that future research focus on different populations.
