Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2017.
In 1960, the median annual earnings of full-time employed women was $22,792 compared to $37,565 earned by men (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). There was a $14,773 difference between the wages. In 2014, the median annual earnings of full-time employed women was $39,621 compared to $50, 383 earned by men (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). There was a $10,762 difference between the wages. The difference in wages based on the sex of an individual is known as the gender wage gap and has been in existence since women entered the workforce. Despite enactment of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Civil Reform and Occupational Integration Act, the gender wage gap has not been eradicated. The gender wage gap has been attributed to a variety of reasons to include human capital, occupational segregation, lack of education or other qualifications, motherhood, and the devaluation of women's work. Yet, these reasons are only partially responsible for the gendered wage gap. The other, less-spoken reason is the American patriarchal society and ingrained gender bias/stereotypes. This research posits that gender role stereotypes continue to exist as part of the social gender norms which leads to both conscious and unconscious sexist behaviors by employers that in part, contribute to the continuation of the gender wage gap in the United States (US). To test the hypothesis, the researcher conducted a quantitative, non-experimental, exploratory correlational study with two Research Questions. The target population were males and females from 18-70 years old with full-time jobs in an array of fields that are geographically dispersed across the United States. The research results indicated no statistically significant relationship between participant income, race/ethnicity, birth sex, or parents' birth sex and perception of performance/pay fairness. However, there is a statistically significant relationship between gender identity, gender determinism, gender equity, and modern sexism to perception of performance/pay fairness. Moreover, this research confirms that gender plays a crucial part in the gender wage gap.
