This qualitative research, examined the career transitions of female senior leaders. Through in-depth interviews it uncovered the factors that influence the mid-career transitions of women in leadership. This research also sought to understand both why and how mid-career women make decisions to leave senior leadership roles to pursue other work. Utilizing thematic analysis, there were four themes that emerged answering the question of why women in senior leadership make major career transitions: frustration with the organization, family priorities, work-life balance, and stress and health. Within these major themes, this research explored the influences that shape the decisions that female leaders make in transitioning careers mid-way through their career trajectories and how female leaders make major career decisions to leave leadership roles to pursue other careers.
