This ethnographic case study of the Calgary Stampede Showband serves to explore and describe the experiences, processes, and practices of this internationally acclaimed performance ensemble in order to understand key features of this organization and community. The Calgary Stampede Showband was founded as a non-profit organization in 1971, and is an official ambassador for the Calgary Stampede. Between 100-140 youth ages 16-21, participate in the band which provides experience through education in the performing arts. Data collection included 165 hours of ethnographic observation and 30 open-ended interviews with staff, band members, alumni, and volunteers. This ethnographic case study makes a number of contributions to the literature. Significantly, it supports conceptualization of youth development through the performing arts enabled by non-profit capacity. Key features related to the social structure of communal commitment are described including youth development programs that support, performing arts that create, and family involvement that facilitates. This ethnography highlights the web of connection and support necessary to create social and cultural capital. The features of communal commitment could prove instructive for youth development program design and enabling contextual factors.
