There are many discussions about the causes of being overweight and obese; consequently, various factors have been identified from a number of research projects. Although many factors affecting obesity have been found through research using scientific methods, we are still striving to find the main cause of its increase observed throughout the nation over the past few decades.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships between obesity and factors that affect obesity and draw an obesity network representing the relationships between obesity and factors based on the Network Science and Structural Equation Modeling. Obesity networks created from the preliminary data analysis were applied to the proposed system to help health professionals and policy makers understand the obesity phenomenon and design effective interventions for prevention.

The conceptual obesity network diagram was constructed to represent the relationships between obesity and its various factors. The obesity network diagram was derived from, and based on, a literature review, in which a health survey dataset was discovered that was used to examine whether the conceptual obesity network reflected reality. This dataset, the CHIS (California Health Interview Survey) contains data from 2001 to 2012, including BMI (Body Mass Index) and nine factors associated with obesity. These factors were extracted and used for the network analysis and Structural Equation Modeling to demonstrate and verify the relationships between obesity and its factors and among the factors themselves. Furthermore, the trend in the relationships between obesity and the factors was examined.

These findings were applied to develop a GIS-based Public Health Data Network Analysis System (PHDNAS), which was designed and developed using GIS technologies and evaluated through interviews, focusing on usability. This new system, designed with a Design Science Research Framework, is expected to enable health professionals and policy makers to perform network and spatial analyses of obesity-related public health data. The novelty of the artifact is the visualization of the relationship between obesity factors and BMI which is represented by a graph, along with geographical information. Therefore, PHDNAS aims to contribute to community health assessments, decision making, and resource allocations in public health.
