The principal purpose of this dissertation is to study the gender wage gap in Thailand's labor market. The dissertation is comprised of the following three essays: (1) Informal Workers' Gender Wage Gap across Thailand's Regions and Economic Sectors; (2) Trend Analysis of the Gender Wage Gap across Thailand's Economic Sectors; and (3) The Impact of the Gender Wage Gap on Thailand's Economic Growth.

The first essay aims to integrate two issues surrounding Thailand's labor market: 'gender wage gap' and 'informal workers'. The purpose of this study is to examine the gender wage gap of formal and informal workers in Thailand by geographic region and across economic sectors. The methods used in this study are Heckman selection method (Maximum Likelihood Estimation) and Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition. The results of this study confirm that there is a gender wage gap in Thailand. Males typically earn higher average wages than females. Even when females have better characteristics (e.g. educational level) than their male counterparts, they still earn lower wages. These empirical findings are revealed across the majority of Thailand's geographic regions and economic sectors.

The second essay analyzes the trend of the gender wage gap in Thailand and determines which factors drive the gender wage gap. This study also includes trend analysis of males' and females' wages and of the gender wage gap in Thailand. Moreover, it forecasts the gender wage gap in Thailand. The methods used in the study are Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition and autoregressive moving-average (ARMA). I also create a female-male wage ratio to measure the gender wage gap. The results indicate that although there has been an increase in males' and females' wages over time, female workers constantly receive lower wages than their male counterparts. The study reveals that, in general, females' characteristics are more favorable than males' characteristics (except in the agricultural sector). The study shows that there is a gender wage gap across Thailand's economic sectors. Also, there is discrimination against women in all economic sectors. The gender wage gap in Thailand is expected to decrease. However, even though males' and females' wages are forecasted to increase between the period 2013Q1 and 2016Q4, it appears that the gender wage gap in Thailand will persist.

The purpose of the third essay is to examine the impact of the gender wage gap on Thailand's economic growth. The methods used in this study are: (1) Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition applied with Heckman method, (2) panel vector autoregression (panel VAR) associated with Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), (3) impulse response functions (IRFs) with Monte Carlo simulation replications, and (4) variance decomposition. The results of this study indicate that Thailand's economy would benefit if there was a decrease in the gender wage gap in the industrial and service sectors. Furthermore, the findings suggest that a decline in the gender wage gap would benefit economic growth. However, increased economic growth leads to an increase in the gender wage gap within the agricultural sector. The study finds that the gender wage gap affects economic growth, and concurrently economic growth affects the gender wage gap. Some policy suggestions are provided so as to reduce the gender wage gap while helping to increase economic growth in Thailand.
