This dissertation demonstrates that villas of ancient Roman Calabria were as interesting and plentiful as those from other regions of Italy. While little known, and sometimes not well published and excavated, when combined with historical sources and a topographical perspective, the surviving remains do provide a means of reconstructing, a vivid impression of villa culture in this seemingly inhospitable part of the Italian peninsula. This dissertation focuses primarily on surviving architectural remains, sculptures, and mosaics, as well as small finds, although the latter are especially poorly published and often inaccessible for direct study.

The preserved architectural remains of villas in this region demonstrate a wide range of types, dates, and functions, attesting to the long period of Roman occupation and the diversity of their activities in the Calabrian landscape. Sculptural finds, while few, are fine and demonstrate an affinity for the very same formats and subjects that are abundantly evident in villas of other areas of ancient Italy, particularly around Rome, the seat of power, and in the Bay of Naples, that cratera ilium delicatum or "Bay of Luxury" that Cicero and others like him relished so much. Mosaic evidence from Calabria also presents a range of stylistic and decorative options that were available to a villa owner, particularly in the imperial period, and include an evocative mixture of Italian and North African styles, subjects, and traditions. While other evidence, such as wall painting and elements of household accountrements, is particularly scarce, these objects can help provide a fuller context for the visual and cultural experience of these villas. Altogether, the available evidence for villa culture in Calabria, while challenging, provides an unexpectedly rich opportunity to expand our understanding of the Roman villa in Italy by taking more fully into account this neglected southern region of the peninsula.
