Thesis (M.A.)--Mills College, 2017.
The rate of perinatal loss is low in Japan, and therefore, the importance of supporting families who have experienced perinatal loss has been overlooked for a long time. However, this sudden experience strongly impacts mothers and other family members. This study investigates the current hospital situations that support families who have experienced perinatal loss in Japan as well as examines how Japanese child life specialists can support the population by taking advantage of their specialty since there are limited studies regarding their involvement in perinatal care. A total of three Japanese medical professionals in Japan were interviewed to determine what support is currently provided, what difficulties they have had, and how certified child life specialists can support families and medical staff in perinatal care for future practices. Results of this study indicate that other medical staff are not able to support siblings of deceased babies, thus, sibling support is one of the best areas in which certified child life specialist can be involved. Overall, increasing awareness of the roles of certified child life specialists in perinatal care is necessary in order to provide better quality of psychosocial care as a multidisciplinary team for both parents and siblings of deceased babies.
