Thesis (M.A.)--Adler School of Professional Psychology, 2017.
In this study, the phenomenological methodology was used to explore the meaning and lived experience of women's resistance to sexualization on Instagram. Six participants, who were active users on Instagram, were recruited to describe their experiences of resisting sexualization of the female body. The results of the study extend the understanding of women's resistance to sexualization to emphasize its multidimensional nature in an online context. Participants' common experiences suggested four key themes: (a) analyzing sexualization as a cultural phenomenon; (b) creators of their content; (c) living the contradiction; and (d) relationship with others. Implications of these results for mental health practitioners include better understanding the rise and use of media and technology to represent the self, the consequences of such practices, and the complexities and multidimensional nature of resisting sexualization in an online realm. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed.
