Using Taiwan as the representative country, the purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Multicultural Counseling Self-efficacy Scale-Confucianism-Taiwan (MCSES-C-T) for use with counselors practicing in countries embracing Confucianism and who employ counseling practices imported from the United States. Theoretical underpinnings for the study were derived from Confucianism and social cognitive theory. Specifically, the MCSES-C-T was designed to evaluate multicultural counseling self-efficacy of counselors in working with four critical multicultural aspects of contemporary Taiwanese culture: (a) Confucian ethics of filial piety, (b) bicultural self, (c) gender equity/patriarchy, and (d) new immigrant families. Data were collected from 304 licensed counseling psychologists and counseling students who had completed at least one counseling practicum in graduate schools in Taiwan. Results of an exploratory factor analysis retained 43 self-report items and indicated that the MCSES-C-T consists of five factors: (a) awareness and knowledge of indigenous cultures, (b) bicultural flexibility, (c) indigenized counseling practices, (d) knowledge of racial groups and counseling resources, and (e) awareness of own race. The reliability coefficients showed reasonable internal consistency greater than .70 for all five subscales of the MCSES-C-T. However, none of the relationships between the amount of multicultural training and the five subscale scores of the MCSES-C-T were significant. In conclusion, the MCSES-C-T appeared to be a valid and reliable instrument. Implications for counseling practice and future research are discussed.
