In this study seventeen modern German versions of "Little Red Riding Hood" will be analyzed in order to establish similarities as well as differences in the choice of motifs and language use.

520 $a In this study seventeen modern German versions of "Little Red Riding Hood" will be analyzed in order to establish similarities as well as differences in the choice of motifs and language use.
520 $a Part One presents a summary of earlier oral and written tales, so that a comparison can be made with the well-known tale "Rotkappchen" by the Brothers Grimm. This tale contains fourteen motifs, three of which are introduced by the Grimms. The remaining motifs, although perhaps slightly altered, can be found in the earlier versions.
520 $a Part Two presents a comparative and critical analysis of these versions, paying particular attention to the use of motifs as well as stylistic features. Since the authors of these versions could safely assume that the reader is familiar with the Grimms' version, the numerous changes and variations, such as the introduction of additional characters, erotic allusions, ironic and satirical elements, and new social settings result in often humorous reading. The traditional world of the fairy tale with its generally positive values and bourgeois morals is skeptically and satirically contrasted with our modern way of life.
