Novel chalcogenopyrylium dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells were synthesized, including monomethine dyes with different chalcogenopyrylium cores, dyes with phosphonate or symmetrical carboxylic acid anchoring groups, and dyes with electron-donating triphenylamine and N, N-dimethylphenylamine moieties. The synthetic strategy for chalcogenopyrylium dyes is to generate the key chalcogenopyranone intermediate initially, followed by condensation with 4-methylpyrylium dyes. The reactive anchoring carboxylic acid group was protected in the synthesis by an ethyl ester and the deprotection method of these dyes is developed in this thesis.
