Little Red Riding Hood was written three hundred years ago and has remained both popular and controversial ever since. As expectations of childhood have changed over the years the story of Little Red has changed as well. Charles Perrault wrote an ironic trickster tale in which Little Red is devoured (or seduced) by a wolf. The Brothers Grimm rewrote the same story, added a hero who saved Little Red and killed the wolf, and produced a fairy tale. Modern writers continue to change the story to suit their personal tastes and to suit the philosophical gestalt of their time. Like all children's literature, Little Red's story both reflects the society that writes it and shapes the society that reads it.
