520 $a Objective: This meta-analysis examined the effect of core strengthening versus extremity strengthening on mobility measures in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS).
520 $a Methods: Studies analyzing core strengthening were compared to studies analyzing extremity strengthening through progressive resistance training (PRT). The studies were meta-analyzed to determine both treatment effect size and homogeneity of pooled studies.
520 $a Results: 9 studies were included in this meta-analysis. Analysis examining mean effect size found a large grand effect size in favor of PRT for improving mobility outcomes in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. A second meta-analysis examining mean rate of change found minimal difference between the 2 interventions.
520 $a Conclusion: When heterogeneity of subjects was controlled for by using a mean rate of change analysis, neither study showed clear benefit over the other. However, because the patients in the core group were consistently more disabled, this may demonstrate that core strengthening may be more beneficial PRT in pwMS with higher levels of disability.
