Thesis (M.A.)--Queen's University (Canada), 1991.
The author has formulated a "three-variable model" to look into the three factors--the role of the state, the international environment and the domestic environment--that may have affected the process of industrialization in Taiwan and South Korea. A central theme to be developed is that the state in Taiwan and Korea is an exclusive centralist political organization dominated by an oligarchic elite, characterized by repression, intolerance, encroachment on the private rights and freedom of citizens and limited autonomy for non statist groups and acutely concerned about their legitimacy, survival and sustenance. However, the states have contributed to policy formulation and implementation, played a central role in directing or cajoling foreign capital into conformity with national development objectives and made the best use of the international and domestic environment in the process of industrialization. The research will be undertaken with the combination of comparative, empirical, statistical, historical and paired case studies. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
