The reform of socialist countries and the demise of socialism have received much attention, but the judgements of the elites and the people of those systems on the theory and practice of socialism remain little studied. This research studies the Chinese reassessment of socialism as the result of the post-Mao search for the sources of the problems of Chinese socialism and the remedies for their rectification. It examines the official and societal discourse on the past understanding of and approach to socialist theory and practice, the economic and political system, and socialism as a theory and model of social development. The characteristics of the Chinese reassessment and the generic problems of theory and practice in socialist movements are highlighted with a brief comparison of the Chinese and Soviet reassessment. This research is a qualitative study and makes close textual analysis of primary materials.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The study suggests that (1) The Chinese reassessment of socialism has evolved progressively from re-examination of mistakes in Chinese theory and practice to problems inherent to the theory and practice of socialism; (2) each phase of the Chinese reassessment has been characterized by a disagreement among three leading groups on the nature and severity of the problems in Chinese practice and the original theory, congealing into a fundamental conflict over the very applicability and desirability of socialism; (3) the intra-system and economic-oriented approach of the dominant, reform leadership has led to a "middle course" between a syncretic reformulation and a preservation of the fundamental framework of the socialist state. The Chinese reassessment has boiled down to two basic judgments on socialism, one methodological and one normative. The former elevates the material base to first priority in building socialism. The latter negates the worldview of Marxism.
