The purposes of this study were to investigate what sociological, psychological, and economic differences are experienced in the personal lives of Chinese students' wives in the U.S.A. as compared to their lives in China, what the main personal and family problems affecting the well-being of these Chinese students' wives are, and what strategies are used by the Chinese students' wives in coping with their changed environment and how effective these coping strategies are.

The findings indicated that CSW's led uncomfortable cultural lives in the U.S.A. They had lowered social status and undesirable employment changes. They shared feelings of insecurity, living in a state of temporariness, inferiority and incompetence. Their marital relationships with their husbands were tested by their foreign lives and showed a diversity. They had different expectations about their futures as a result of their educational backgrounds and their ideas about returning to China. They stayed in the U.S.A. primarily for three reasons: for their husbands, for their professional self-development, and for their children's education. Passport, visa, and money problems prevented CSW's from visiting China and their families.

It is recommended that the U.S.A. and Chinese governments, American universities, home economists, and related professionals work together with better understanding to improve Chinese students' wives' life situations in the U.S.A.
