In this thesis, various types of data were analyzed in order to examine the learnability of the dative lexical alternation in English and crosslinguistically. Theoretically, this required a consideration of the nature of the lexical representation of dative verbs, developmental stages in acquisition of lexical structures, the effect of typological characteristics of interacting languages in second language acquisition, and the availability of language universals to adult learners for representing dative verbs. Data were collected on dative lexical structures and the dative alternation from 51 native speakers of English, and 95 Japanese and Chinese non-native learners of English at two proficiency levels, in free production and elicited production tasks. In addition, data previously collected by various researchers on acquisition of the dative alternation for English, Chinese, Japanese, and French were analyzed for crosslinguistic variation and crosslinguistic influence. The results for the native speakers supported Pinker's (1989) claim that lexical structures are semantic and that lexical alternations are narrowly defined by verb class membership. The results for the non-native speakers showed that there was first language influence on the subjects' production of lexical structures, that universal semantic features were no longer available for overcoming overgeneralization errors, and that there were developmental gains in ability to produce target lexical structures and to differentiate between verbs. The crosslinguistic comparison further showed that development in a target language proceeds from the unmarked to the marked structure as defined for that language based on typological criteria, and that learners transfer systematic and idiosyncratic features of their first language based on typological similarity but not on the markedness relationships between the two languages.Subjects--Topical Terms:
