The Dabie Mountains are a coesite-bearing continental crustal terrane within the Qinling-Dabie collision zone between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons in central China. Based on this study, the Dabie Mountains are subdivided into two terranes: the northern Dabie terrane (NDT) and southern Dabie terrane (SDT). The NDT contains eclogites associated with ultramafics ("internal eclogite"), whereas the SDT contains abundant eclogite blocks associated with gneiss ("external eclogite") as well as internal eclogites.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Four types of eclogites are recognized according to their field occurrences and mineral parageneses. Type I and II eclogites occur in both the NDT and the SDT as layers or lenses in serpentinized ultramafic bodies and contain garnet + clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + rutile and garnet + clinopyroxene + rutile + hornblende, respectively. They formed at P-T conditions of $>$30 kb and $>$650$\sp\circ$C, and $>$20 kb and $>$800$\sp\circ$C, respectively. Type III eclogites occur only in the SDT as blocks in gneisses and marbles, and contain omphacite + garnet + phengite + epidote + coesite/quartz + carbonate + rutile. Coesite occurs as inclusions in both omphacite and garnet. They formed at P $>$ 28 kb and T = 639-778$\sp\circ$C. Type IV eclogites are also restricted in the SDT as coherent layers interbedded with gneisses and amphibolites, and include omphacite + garnet + glaucophane + kyanite + epidote + phengite + quartz + rutile. They formed at P-T conditions of $>$22 kb and 580-610$\sp\circ$C. All four eclogite types were affected by a retrograde amphibolite and greenschist facies metamorphism at P $\sim$ 6 kb and T = 475-510$\sp\circ$C. Parageneses and compositions of minerals from Type III and IV eclogites indicate that these eclogites have undergone a clockwise P-T evolution path. The ultramafics associated with the internal eclogites have recorded only an uplift P-T history.

Some of the country rocks of eclogites in the SDT (garnet biotite gneiss, marble, and metapelite) contain ultrahigh-pressure assemblages including quartz pseudomorphs after coesite and calcite pseudomorphs after aragonite. This observation indicates that the country rocks have a metamorphic P-T evolution compatible with that of coesite-bearing eclogites.

This study concludes that the continental crust of the SDT in the Dabie Mountains has been subjected to a regional ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism beneath the NDT. The ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism occurred within a north-dipping subduction zone that existed between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons in Triassic time.
