Thesis (Ed.D.)--Teachers College, Columbia University, 1991.
This study presents a variety of intellectual approaches and techniques for ESL/EFL teachers and advanced students to face the challenge of English poetry, to increase their ability to read and appreciate English poetry with discerning eyes, to offer them some common principles with which to test their own understanding and appreciation, and to enhance their confidence and skills in attaining personal pleasure and language improvement through reading English poetry. Based upon the author's own observation, reflection and experience as a foreign student and teacher in wrestling with English poetry, as well as a researcher in the pedagogical literature concerning the study of poetry published in the past decades, this study will provide rationales, sample analyses, and concrete strategies for entering English poetry in a multiplicity of ways. This study will, from various angles, answer why English poetry is particularly challenging for both ESL/EFL learners as well as native speakers. It is also designed as a remedy to the deplorable scarcity of instructional materials for teaching English poetry to ESL/EFL students. Rather than a textbook, this study is much closer to a handbook, essentially intended for self-improvement or self-enjoyment.Subjects--Topical Terms:
