520 $a The problem. The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnoses that were made by a computer-aided diagnosis system and by acupuncturists in California and to determine whether or not there was a significant difference between these diagnoses.
520 $a Method. A descriptive study was conducted and 95 licensed acupuncturists in California served as the sample; each of them was surveyed using two mailed questionnaires. The first questionnaire was designed to invite them to participate as well as to solicit demographic data. Then, a questionnaire package was sent to each participant to get data in two specific areas: (1) general information about the patient, (2) the participants' diagnosis and treatment of their patients' symptoms. One-way Analysis of Variance was used to analyze the data collected.
520 $a Results. The analysis of data showed that the diagnoses made by acupuncturists in California were significantly different from those made by a computer-aided diagnosis system. Also, results showed that gender, nationality, length and location of training received, and length of practice period all affect the diagnosis of the acupuncturists.
