Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Dallas, 1991.
Extensive bulk chemical and petrographic characterization of 37 coals and vitrinite concentrates of the Lower Kittanning Seam (Carboniferous) from western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio shows that the coals represent a uniform organic facies. Geochemical differences among the samples are due to rank, with vitrinite reflectances ranging from 0.53 to 1.76%. The sample suite affords a unique opportunity to evaluate the effects of thermal maturity on a range of commonly used molecular parameters in samples that show virtually no variations in organic matter. Absolute concentrations of molecular constituents rather than sample ratios were determined based on addition of internal standards to the extractable organic matter prior to separation by liquid chromatography.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Several common maturity indices (C$\sb{29}$ steranes, $\rm T\sb{s}/T\sb{m}$, MDR and MPI 1) either do not show a systematic change with maturation or exhibit changes that are based on rates of formation and destruction of the species rather than on molecular conversions. Consequently, these parameters, or the kinetic models based on them, are of limited use in assessing maturity and must be used with caution.

Some molecular source parameters (e.g., Pr/Ph, C$\sb{27}$/C$\sb{29}$ sterane, 4$\beta$(H) eudesmane/8$\beta$(H) drimane and C$\sb{30}$ hopane/C$\sb{23}$ cheilanthane) that are commonly used to identify non-marine source environments may show significant changes with maturity. The effect is that at higher levels of maturity, these molecular source indicators take on a more "marine" signature, even though there is no change in organic facies. Consequently, crude oils from overmature non-marine source rocks may exhibit a more "marine" profile.

Several molecular parameters (e.g., C$\sb{29}$ norhopane/C$\sb{30}$ hopane, 8$\beta$(H), C$\sb{29}$ $\alpha\alpha\alpha$ 20R sterane/C$\sb{30}$ hopane, 16$\beta$(H) phyllocladane/C$\sb{30}$ hopane and DBT/P) are good "source" indicators for Type III kerogens because they exhibit no change with increasing maturity levels.
