Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fresno, 1991.
The purpose of this study was to examine the issues involved in the development of the Chinese exclusion acts in the United States between 1868 and 1892. The issues detailed dealt with the social, economic, political, and diplomatic responses of the United States to Chinese immigration and its exclusion in the latter half of the nineteenth century. United States government documents, books, scholarly journals, magazines, and newspaper articles in the English language were utilized in order to present a balanced account of the opinions of contemporaries of the late nineteenth century and those of scholars of the last three decades of the twentieth century. The writer concludes that, although antipathies were racially based, transformations in American society, political, social, and diplomatic, coupled with a distressed economy caused tensions to rise to the point of excluding the Chinese.Subjects--Topical Terms:
