Thesis (Ph.D.)--The New School, 2016.
This dissertation is a study of the experiences of gay, bisexual and queer Asian men in finding their voice and space in combating racism and homophobia in New York City---a seemingly and liberal city. This detailed ethnography theorizes a "double closet life"---one as a gay, bisexual or queer man and another as an Asian man. These twin identities present different sets of challenges, and by using ethnography and in depth interviews with twenty-three gay, bisexual and queer Asian men, I attempt to understand the fears, anxieties and daily struggles in reconciling these two identities. The work was conducted on a queer Asian group, Gay Asian Pacific Islander Men In New York (GAPIMNY) by attending their general and steering committee meetings, and various political and social events, conferences held by National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) and National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA), as well as visiting gay Asian "rice" bars owned by their admirers known as rice queens, and other mainstream gay social venues. These respondents shared their family "coming out" experiences, their dating and sexual encounters in gay social space, and other queer Asian organizations. In addition, chatrooms, gay dating and hook websites, smartphone applications in finding romance and hookups, and their interactions in Internet forums were utilized. What these queer Asian men face is homophobia within their Asian communities and racism within the larger LGBT community. Ideologies, such as model minority, portray the Asian community as obedient, heterosexual, and naturally avoidant of confrontations and troubles, but also depicts Asian men as nerdy, physically weak, and lacking in masculinity. These imperialistic dogmas create struggles for family to accept their gay sons, and in the social scene, queer Asian men are considered the least desirable and exploited by rice queens (Caucasian men who only dates Asians). Fortunately, GAPIMNY and other similar groups create safe political and social spaces for LGBT Asian men to break these invisible barriers, shatter the undesirable label, and to reconcile their racial and sexual identities.
