Reciprocal grafting was used to investigate the effects of rootstock and scion on the growth and yield of sweet potatoes. When 'LO-323', 'LI-207', 'Travis' and 'Vardaman' genotypes were used, the yields of storage roots within rootstock genotypes, did not change with different tops. 'Travis' and 'Vardaman' had higher-yielding root systems than 'LO-323' and 'LI-207', they also reduced the fresh weights of leaf blade, petiole and stem of their scions. However, when 'LO-323' and 'Tainung 57' were used, yield differences within rootstock genotypes were found, except in the experiment planted on Nov. 28, in which exceptionally low yields were obtained. The root system influenced top growth only when light or other environmental factors were not limiting.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Grafting did not induce detectable changes in storage root initiation or IAA-oxidase activities of 'LO-323' and 'Tainung 57'. When IAA-oxidase activity in the root system was determined by the colorimetric method of Gordon and Weber, the trend toward increased activity of IAA-oxidase at the point of storage root initiation was clear and significant in some experiments. The electrophoresis method of determining IAA-oxidase activity was more consistent, indicating increased activity at the approximate time (35 days after planting) of storage root initiation. There was a significant reduction in IAA-oxidase activity at 40 and 45 days after planting for the 'LO-323' root system. Auxin (IAA) might have to be reduced for storage root initiation and higher auxin (IAA) levels might be required for storage root development.

Two isozymes with similar activities were involved in IAA-oxidase activity. Isozyme-2 accounted for a greater percentage of total activity at 30 days after planting and isozyme-1 at 40 and 45 days, which might be important in storage root development.
