This study evaluates the significance of aryl ether cleavages in the alkaline delignification of Norway spruce and aspen for both kraft and soda processes. The aryl ether-cleavage reaction was monitored by phenolic hydroxyl group generation in the pulp residual lignin as estimated by periodate oxidation method.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In soda cooking, the extent of delignification up to about 90% level was closely related to aryl-ether hydrolysis reactions. Further delignification was relatively unaffected by the ether cleavage reaction. A similar trend was observed for aspen except displaying a distinct initial phase up to about 30% delignification. This initial delignification seems to be associated with the hydrolysis of few aryl ether units.

The impact of aryl ether hydrolysis on alkaline delignification is equally comparable for both soda and kraft cooks and this was not considerably affected by pulping temperatures (160-180$\sp\circ$C), sulfidity, alkali concentration (0.5-1.5M) and AQ addition.

Interestingly, a nearly linear "isokinetic" (enthalphy-entrophyl) relationship was observed for both the aryl ether-hydrolysis and delignification reactions. The kinetic data further support the significance of aryl-ather cleavages in the alkaline delignification process.
