Thesis (M.A.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 1994.
The primary purpose of this thesis is to examine the development of South Korea and Taiwan between 1895 and 1985 to determine whether they represent strict adherence to neo-classical development strategies. In order to analyze the factors that led to the rapid development of South Korea and Taiwan the thesis first examines the two main development strategies used by developing countries since the end of World War II: those based on modernization theory and those based on dependency theory. Next, the political economy of South Korea and Taiwan is examined. Then, the historical circumstances and the policies used by South Korea and Taiwan are studied to show that they do not represent countries that adhered solely to neo-classical development strategies.
