Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 1995.
This dissertation examines an important but often neglected event in both Chinese social and political history and the history of Sino-American relations: the anti-American boycott movement of 1905-06. It focuses on some of the areas that have been overlooked by existing works: a comparative study of the local history of two boycott centers, Shanghai and Canton; the propaganda techniques and mobilization strategies of this social movement; the involvement of overseas Chinese; the role of the boycott in the history of the 1911 Revolution; and the position of the event in this context of Chinese foreign relations.Subjects--Topical Terms:

One of the great strengths of the dissertation lies in its innovative concepts and methodological eclecticism. Instead of looking only at diplomatic tensions, economic struggles, or the evolution within China of a social movement, it devotes a good deal of attention to all of these things; instead of using only familiar sources, newly available archival materials, or long accessible but seldom before used documents such as overseas Chinese newspapers, it draws upon all of these; and instead of focusing exclusively upon one part of the world, it looks at relevant developments that occurred simultaneously in not only China and America but also Southeast Asia, where support for the boycott was substantial. This study thus offers a new perspective to people in a variety of fields and disciplines, and places the events of 1905-06 in a broad and useful historical context.

The author argues that the legacy of the boycott to antiforeign activities and popular movements in twentieth-century China was significant. In terms of the composition of participants, the number of people involved, the scope and extent of the protest, the variety of propaganda techniques and mobilization strategies adopted, the 1905-06 boycott bore a great resemblance to the antiforeign protests in the later decades. More important, the nonviolent boycott as a means of resisting foreign aggression became both the dominant form of antiforeign protests and an endemic feature of political life during the first decades of the Republic. The 1905-06 boycott movement, thus, became the genesis of the popular protests of twentieth-century China.
