Clay mineralogy, geochemistry, and industrial uses of both primary and secondary kaolin clay deposits from Maoming and Guoshan in South China and eastern Washington-Idaho in U.S.A. have been studied in an attempt to better understand the formation of halloysite and kaolinite in these deposits and the influence of halloysite on the industrial performance of kaolin. X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis, oxygen isotope analysis, and conventional kaolin evaluation procedures were used for characterization; and an experiment of measuring viscosities for various blends of kaolinite and halloysite was carried out.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Mineralogical and geochemical data indicate that the formation of halloysite and kaolinite in both primary and seconday deposits is largely controlled by types of source materials. Spheroidal halloysite is formed primarily from alteration of volcanic ash-rich sediments and from weathering of plagioclase in basalt. Tubular halloysite is formed predominately from weathering of plagioclase in feldspathic parent rocks such as granite, granodiorite, pegmatite, and gneiss. Kaolinite is formed from alteration of feldspars and micas, and its formation from feldspars is especially favored when abundant mica is present. Kaolinite may be transformed into halloysite or vice versa in a weathering environment. However kaolinite is generally favored when a protective cover is present on top of a weathering profile and when sediments undergo strong subaerial weathering or post-depositional diagenesis. Rheological experiments showed that the presence of tubular halloysite in kaolin generally increases viscosities of high-solids kaolin suspensions but the presence of spheroidal halloysite decreases viscosities. Halloysite affects kaolin rheology through modification of particle packing during flow of high solids kaolin suspensions.

The Maoming kaolin contains no halloysite and possibly can be processed to produce a clay of paper coating grade. The Guoshan kaolin consists largely of tubular halloysite and cannot be used for paper filling or coating but has potential as an excellent ceramic clay. The clays from the eastern Washington-Idaho area are quite variable in mineralogy and physical and chemical properties. Some, such as the Mica deposit from Spokane, Washington have potential uses as filler clays.
