In the era of the 1950s and 1960s, editorial cartoons were monotonous both in form and style. Their duty was to echo official propaganda against public enemies. Names of cartoonists which immediately come to mind are Liang Chung-ming, Liang Yu-ming, Niu Ko, Li Shan, Ching Ho, and Cheng Yi. But the situation began to change in the 1970s. In the early 1970s, some creative cartoonists, such as Chen Chao-pao, Chao Ning, Wang Ting-tai, revived the function of social comment in editorial cartoons. In the late 1970s, when fierce opposition to the government was rampant, critical cartoons came into being. The thriving situation in cartooning in the 1980s marked another upsurge in the annals of cartoon development, which was due largely to the rapidly changing domestic political circumstances. The flourishing situation is often regarded as proof that editorial cartoons are enjoying a rebirth. At this turning point, many cartoonists, such as CoCo, Yu Fu, Chi-Ching, L.C.C., and Lin Hsin are establishing their reputations as political commentators.

Compared to the previous generation of cartoonists, the cultural background of this new generation outgrew the limits of localization in the wake of the internationalization of Taiwan' s economy and culture. To some degree, their perception of the role of political cartoonists, the content and function of political cartoons and their relations with the editor are different from their predecessors. They are the main force in Taiwan' s editorial cartoon arena nowadays. Whether they are senior cartoonists or contemporary cartoonists, they all regard their work as a very solemn endeavor. They are aware of their responsibility to the people, so they pay attention to the social effects of their cartoons.
