When the nomadic Uyghurs moved to the sedentary Khocho region in A.D. 840, they established a kingdom that lasted about four centuries. During their rule, the Khocho Uyghurs experienced great cultural flowering. Although they came from a nomadic cultural background, the Uyghurs adopted a policy tolerant of alien religions and sedentary cultures. With their strong military force and capable governing, the new Uyghur rulers provided various ethnic and religious communities in their kingdom with a peaceful and stable life. Under this peaceful circumstance, various religious groups were able to compete with, borrow from and influence one another. To expand their religious influence, each community translated various religious scriptures, and created much literature and art. These animated cultural activities and mutual cultural interactions resulted in the colorful flourishing of the Khocho Uyghur culture, which explains how tolerance and cultural variety could stimulate cultural flourishing in a heterogeneous society.Subjects--Topical Terms:
