This qualitative study explores the attitudes toward child care services, parental roles and women's among a sample of 20 Taiwanese mothers who have chosen to use 24-hour child care services. The sample was limited to married women who have only one child who is under six years of age, who use non-relative care outside of the home, and who use child care for 24-hour periods. The interviews were semi-structured and allowed women to discuss their decision to use 24-hour care, the advantages and limitations of that decision, their views on the roles of women and the responsibilities of parenthood.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The reasons for the choice of out-of-home 24-hour care differed among individuals. Mothers voiced concerns about the competing demands of work and motherhood. Some of these concerns were shaped by the economic necessity to work. Other concerns were influenced by the mother's commitment to work and career. One concern that emerged from the interviews was that women who took time away from their careers to care for young children would be penalized in terms of seniority, promotions, and job stability. Mothers emphasized their commitment to mothering responsibilities and their roles in educating and training children after the age of three; however, this group of mothers appeared to agree the care of infants and very young children was best left to professional baby-sitters and child care workers.

While the findings are limited to middle-class women similar to the participants, this preliminary study raises a host of questions about the changing roles of women in Taiwan and the cultural and individual factors which affect child care and parenting decisions. Implications for social work practice and future research are discussed.
