Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2015.

This dissertation studies spatial competition in milk procurement markets in Wisconsin. A central theme of this dissertation is the importance of preferences for non-price handler attributes in determining equilibrium spatial outcomes. In Chapter 1, I identify factors associated with the probability of a farmer matching with a cooperative handler. In Chapter 2, I develop a discrete-choice spatial competition model of agricultural procurement markets. Using this model, I am able to develop a rigorous definition and proof of the competitive yardstick effect of cooperative handlers. In Chapter 3, I examine the impact of various factors on spatial pricing equilibria in the Wisconsin milk procurement market. In addition to estimating the pricing equation for the price received by farmers for milk, I also estimate the degree of transportation inefficiency in the industry that occurs as a result of farmers' milk not always being sent to the processing plant the closest feasible distance to the farmer.
