The emergence of the suburban, "Sunbelt South" is a phenomenon that defies regional historical tradition. The South's meteoric rise from the leading national economic problem prior to World War II to the nation's number one economic opportunity by the later part of the twentieth century is exemplified by the city of Marietta, Georgia. Marietta, the seat of Cobb County, once demonstrated the dogmatic mindset of agrarian philosophy. Once these ideals were combined with New South "boosterism," the area became locked in a quasi-colonial economic state. The massive mobilization effort brought on by American entry into World War II can be viewed as the catalyst of southern socioeconomic change. Federal government initiatives to build manufacturing facilities away from vulnerable coastlines led to the establishment of the Bell B-29 production plant in Marietta. The facility, the largest manufacturing center ever built in the South, turned out 668 B-29 Superfortresses between 1943 and 1945. The impressive production numbers of a plural workforce, combined with an ideological push from local leaders, demonstrate the socioeconomic emergence of the suburban, "Sunbelt South." Due to the existing Bell Bomber Plant shell, the Lockheed Corporation chose the site for B-29 refurbishing in 1951. Instantly, the adrenaline shot of the military industrial complex revitalized the area's economy and pushed the entire region toward modernity over the following decades.
