Thesis (M.A.)--University of Wyoming, 2016.
This essay traces the gradual assimilation of Utah Mormons between the years 1869 and 1917, assessing how and why they relinquished isolationist practices and beliefs for increased camaraderie with the outside world. The research is based upon both secondary sources (i.e., monographs and articles) as well as primary documents from the Utah State Archives. The chief findings of this project are that 1) natural changes within the Utah economy precipitated assimilation, as did 2) increased immigration and heightened labor activism, and 3) executive pressure from the federal government. Social Movement Theory provides the conceptual underpinning for this project.
