Multicultural team leaders normally do not know what causes conflict, why it happens, and how to use the various methods available to them to manage it. In addition, internal training programs to help multicultural team leaders manage conflict are limited. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate how multicultural team leaders manage team member conflict. Data was collected through face-to face and phone interviews with multicultural team leaders and team members. The data collected during interviews was organized, coded, and analyzed. Microsoft Excel was used to sort, organize, and code relevant information emerging from the interview transcripts. The study revealed that language barriers, different ways of working, and distractions during discussions and meetings were common causes of conflict. Conflict management methods such as (a) asking for clarification, probing for deeper meaning, and making certain that team members understand what was said, (b) being sure that the work performed supports the strategies, goals, and objectives, using team principles and guidelines, and that tasks are assigned properly, (c) using a collaborative leadership style and approach depending on the behavioral situation, to seek a common ground, acting as a conflict facilitator, and getting team members in an environment outside the workplace assure multicultural team leaders' success at managing conflict. This study also identified the importance of multicultural leader conflict management training and outlined what could be a stronger curriculum against what exists today. It is recommended that further studies be done to broaden the knowledge of conflict causes and identify methods to manage them.
