Thesis (D.B.A.)--Universidad del Turabo (Puerto Rico), 2016.
The entrepreneur university concept has been adopted for many universities around the globe. Some of the reasons to adopt it are its contribution to regional development, job creation, and additional source of income and prestige for the institutions. The traditional university model, with missions and objectives focused on education and knowledge-focused research, has been transformed towards an academic entrepreneurial model. Countless studies have been undertaken to identify the characteristics and factors that influence and lead to entrepreneurial action. Nevertheless, the literature is very limited about entrepreneurship attitudes, intentions and behavior among the university faculty. The planned conduct theory is a robust method that has been used to evaluate and understand the attitudes and intention of entrepreneur individuals. This method utilizes planned behavior models to understand and explain the entrepreneur attitudes and intentions among faculty in the university context. The purpose of this investigation is to investigate the potential for academic entrepreneurship by studying the attitude, intention and behavior of university faculty professors towards entrepreneurial activities. The study identifies three levels of entrepreneurial activity 1) activities related to entrepreneurial education, 3) activities related to investigation for knowledge, and 3) activities related to commercialization. The study suggest that factors such as faculty department, level of education, self-efficacy, and legitimacy of the entrepreneurial activity influence the attitude, intentions and behavior of the faculty professor. In addition, it suggests that attitude, determined by the perception of desirability and perception of viability, influences the intentions of the academic faculty to develop entrepreneurial activities in the academic context.
