This dissertation assesses the need for group programming aimed at addressing the unique intrapersonal and interpersonal challenges of first-time mothers-to-be, and provides an outline for a yoga and mindfulness-based program to foster group support and general wellness for this group of women. A review of the literature suggests that although the majority of women adjust well to pregnancy, some women who are pregnant for the first time may encounter challenges related to body image, anxieties surrounding childbirth, infant health, and parenting, as well as changes to significant supportive relationships during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The current needs assessment, which takes the form of a qualitative study in the tradition of transcendental/psychological phenomenological inquiry, examines the phenomenon of pregnancy and the transition into first-time motherhood to better understand the many joys and challenges women encounter. The results of this study were analyzed and the key findings used to create a 10-week yoga and mindfulness-based group program. With its philosophical and practical focus on self-awareness and acceptance of internal states, as well as its inclusion of mindfulness practice, yoga provides an ideal framework for working with women as they encounter the rapid physical, emotional, and identity-related transitions prompted by pregnancy. Such a program will ultimately enhance women's mental health, establish peer support during pregnancy and postpartum, and help facilitate a healthy transition into parenthood.
