From a sample of two senior college and two community college presidents, from a system governing body of colleges, along with three members of their respective senior leadership strategic teams, interviews were conducted to answer three research questions. First, what Great Recession challenges to their colleges did the presidents and their strategic teams identify? Second, what actions did the presidents and their strategic teams take to respond to the challenges? Third, what lessons did the presidents and their strategic teams draw from their experience with addressing the challenges?

Drawing on the learning lenses of higher education environments, experiential and self-directed learning, and strategic learning, the research evidences the influence of the complex higher education setting and strategic learning as derived from the Pietersen (2002, 2004, 2010) Strategic Learning Cycle model (SLC). In line with the model, this involved the study sample leaders in steps of learning, focusing, aligning, and executing strategies around key priorities to address their recessionary challenges.

It was found that the leaders moved expeditiously through the learning step of the model in response to immediate demands, but did provide focused attention, alignment with stakeholders, and execution of strategies to implement their key institutional priorities. Further, a new and expanded strategic learning model, the Challenge Learning Advancement Model for Strategic Learning (CLAM-SL), is recommended from the findings and conclusions. The CLAM-SL model includes the steps of assessment, planning, collaboration, communication, action, and advancement. It provides opportunities for application in the institutional setting and provokes questions for future Adult Education research.
