This dissertation looked at how Chinese language curriculum can be improved by examining three specific areas of curriculum design: curriculum structure, curriculum standardization, and curriculum content. Through classroom observations, teacher surveys, teacher interviews, and student surveys, the research has been able to present several suggestions about curriculum design. Two public school programs were looked at and one independent school were looked at in the hopes of being able to make a comparison; this hope was successful. Conclusions focus on the balancing and separation of cultural content and linguistic content. They also include suggestions about standardization (revision and the current lack) and how different kinds of students are impacted by different teaching strategies and course structures.
