Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northcentral University, 2016.
The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to examine the use of streamlined succession planning and other selection processes for the presidential positions of Tennessee universities over a 25-year period from 1989 to 2014 for the 27 universities within Tennessee. The high turnover of university presidents highlights the need for university board members to remain aware of potential internal candidates who may be groomed for senior positions and the need to determine when an external candidate must be sought. Themes emerged from the analysis of six participant interviews derived from a purposeful sample of Tennessee universities. Data analysis used Dedoose software to support pattern matching, coding, and identification of developing themes to reach data saturation. Three major themes emerged: (a) succession planning limits candidate options, (b) national searches draw diverse candidates, and (c) search firms help expedite the search process. In addition, one minor theme emerged: leadership ability as a primary selection criterion. Recommendations for practice for university board members were to develop knowledge about the usefulness of succession planning in colleges and universities, develop the selection process within postsecondary institutions in the absence of succession planning, and increase education and training of academic faculty and staff to be competitive for presidential positions. Recommendations for future research included: a qualitative multiple case study of succession planning to include all Tennessee community colleges and 4-year colleges; a qualitative phenomenological study at universities in other U.S. states; and a quantitative correlational study on the tenure rate of university presidents to assess the longevity of presidents recommended by search firms.
