The transition of veterans from military service to the civilian workforce has always been a unique challenge for the civilian community, yet scholarly literature has not included the lived experiences of noncareer Army veterans as they consider the prospect of a transition to the civilian workforce. This study augmented the limited knowledge available on the phenomenon by examining the lived experiences of noncareer veterans. The focal point of the study was to answer the research question, How do noncareer Army veterans perceive and describe the experience of the prospect of a transition from the military to the civilian workforce? The phenomenological study encompassed comprehensive telephone interviews of 12 noncareer Army veterans in the northeast region of the United States who had not completed 20 years' active service. In analyzing the gathered information, the modification of the van Kaam method of analysis of phenomenological data was utilized to gain insight into participants' lived experiences. Five core themes from the analysis of data emerged: family, Army Career and Alumni Program, networking, preparation, and time. Given the limited knowledge available on the phenomenon, this study assisted with closing the gap in scholarly literature of how noncareer Army veterans perceive the prospect of a transition from the military to the civilian workforce. Furthermore, findings from this study may aid those noncareer veteran members considering the transition to the civilian workforce and those who intend to make a successful shift to civilian employment. Two recommendations were offered for future research: the study of this topic by rank tier to understand the differences in the prospect, if any, of the lived experiences of officers versus their enlisted counterparts; and the study of this topic by sex as noncareer veteran women may have different prospects than noncareer veteran men.
