Thesis (Psy.D.)--Fielding Graduate University, 2015.
Since premiering in 1969, Sesame Street has expanded to enhance the learning experience of children worldwide. A media psychology-inspired quantitative content analysis of the U.S. exemplary series relative to the psychological need theory of personality motivational themes, achievement, affiliation, and power, in Sesame Street season premiere episodes from 1969 to 2013 reveals an estimated motivational theme frequency of 2,102 with a mean of 48. An analysis of the themes viewed separately indicates that achievement totals 580, affiliation totals 1,031, and power totals 491. The implication is that Sesame Street primarily orients children toward affiliation. Statistically significant findings suggest that there have been substantial increases in the frequency of the incidences over time. Entwined with the research and distinguishing it from others is an unprecedented adaptation of McClelland's (2010) and Winter's (1994) motive coding systems, which illustrate a technique for measuring the motivational themes in the screen media platform- television.
