Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), 2013.
The Midi music festival is the largest open-air rock festival in china. This case study will draw upon multiple research methods including textual analysis, participant observation and in-depth interviews, based on Pierre Bourdieu's framework of productive theory, the research explored the productive process of midi music festival in the context of culture, power and politics in modern China. The study is divided into four sections regarding the Midi's history, scene, production and audiences respectively. (1) The study reviewed the developing process of Midi school of music and Midi music festival in the past twenty years. As the only school focusing on rock music education in China, Midi school of music offered both professional training to young rock lovers and the space for the birth and initial development of Midi music festival. Besides, from the campus to urban parks, and then to be a national-wide music tour festival, Midi offered more expressive spaces for Chinese rock music. (2) Midi music festival is a grand "open performance space" held on a "square" as Bakhtim's concept of carnival, in which people can be out of the orthodox secular rules and construct their own world. (3) By examining the festival's productive process, productive logic, associated social context (such as politics and economy) as well as their interaction, the research also did a comparative study on Midi among three cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Zhenjiang. (4) Having studied the audiences of Midi music festival within the framework of consumer-culture, the study took the Midier, audience of Midi music festival, as fan-producers and fan-consumers, which played an important role in the production of Midi music festival and became one of its core components. Midi music festival is a large-scale open-air rock festival, and has received limited support from the Chinese government due to the rock music's independent and rebellious spirit. However, considering its diversified presentation on Chinese culture and vital role in the production of urban culture, the midi music festival has also been incorporated with the Chinese government as a part of its cultural and creative industry.
