Female monsters are commonly used to reflect male anxiety towards female sexuality and the fear of displacement of power in both pre-modern Korean literature and contemporary films. These narratives express the motif of revenge because the disgruntled emotions of pre-modern women cannot be released under the strict control of patriarchal social norms and society's emphasis on female virtue. Female monsters continue to be portrayed in contemporary films, which show that the stress between the two genders still exists in Korea today. Even though the images of supernatural female monsters remain the same in contemporary film, they are dramatized and romanticized in TV dramas, so they are transformed from vengeful monsters to charming and endearing female protagonists. The different images of supernatural female monsters in these two genres of mass media indicated that a TV drama is more suitable to subvert the prejudice against female ghosts and fox spirits.
