In response to both water management issues and economic pressure to attract foreign investment, the municipal government of Hohhot, China aimed to create an appealing environment by including regulating the Xiaohei River and transforming the resulting concrete water course into a city amenity. To achieve the goal of making Hohhot a sustainable city, this research aims to explore means by which the channelized riverfront environment can contribute to this goal.

520 $a Through a review of theories relating to sustainable city design and river development, detailed examination of three case studies, principles and approaches were generated and combined to create a framework to guide the riverfront design of the Xiaohei River. Principles and approaches from the framework were combined with the city's long range plan and identify social-cultural needs to inform potential design solutions. A city-scale map and five site-scale schematic sections with design recommendations illustrate the study results. The thesis demonstrates potential to enhance the ecological, social and cultural value of the Xiaohei River Regulation Project.
