Thesis (D.N.P.)--Brandman University, 2017.
Nonattendance, one of the major problems plaguing health care and providers affects all age, gender and ethnic groups, with young adults mostly impacted. Different reminder strategies have been adopted to reduce no-show, yet the problem continues to persist, especially among younger adults. While younger adults are well versed with social media, and use them for social interaction and communication, no study has looked into how this technology would be perceived by young adults for medical appointment scheduling and reminders. Therefore, this study has two main objectives: first, to compare perception of use of social media in relation to existing messaging platforms; second, to assess how younger and older college level adults differ in their preference for social media platform.

A Qualtrics survey tool consisting of 16 item questionnaires was used to sample the opinion of 104 local community college students. The results show cell phone reminders is a mostly preferred messaging platform (n=67; 64.4%), followed by emails (n=16; 16.3%), and social media (n=8; 7.7%). Younger college-level adults are not more likely to prefer or recommend social media platform than older college level adults (chi-square=1.16, p >.28). No relationship exists between age, gender, and social media preference (chi-square = 34.87, p =.07) and (chi=5.17; p =.522) respectively.
