Thesis (M.A.)--Gonzaga University, 2016.
This study examines the current state of Air Force communication as perceived by enlisted personnel. Based in Deetz's critical theory of communication in organizations, Habermas' discourse ethics, Buber's dialogic ethics, and discussions of organizational communication barriers and organizational silence, the research sought to identify any adverse communication trends. Of particular interest were those trends related to morale concerns and communication problems generated by differences in age and education levels amongst enlisted personnel. Through the review of 52 surveys and five interviews, several indicators of organizational communication barriers, dysfunctional leadership, and organizational silence were identified in support of the research questions. Suggestions for future research include a more diverse sample to expound upon these findings. Recommendation for addressing these adverse trends include greater utilization of participatory decision-making and improved use of the double interact loop.
