Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2017.
The primary objective of this study is to examine the attitudes toward mental health of Korean Americans between first and second generation participants. In addition to this objective, the study will also examine attitudes toward seeking professional psychological services between first and second generation Korean Americans. Comparing the two data sets may provide further information on why Asian Americans, particularly Korean Americans, do not utilize mental health services as it pertains to generational differences. Exactly 123 Korean Americans responded to a questionnaires made available via the survey website, Survey Monkey. The questionnaires consist of three instruments: demographic, The Attitude Toward Seeking Professional Help Scale, and the Community Attitude toward Mental Illness. The results suggested that in regards to mental health attitudes, second generation Korean Americans had a moderately better attitude toward those suffering from a mental illness. First generation Korean American participants were more likely to endorse statements that associate stigma with mental illness. In regards to mental health service utilization, there appeared to be no difference in generation responses. The study's results suggested that both groups were less likely to seek professional services for a mental illness. The study did have some additional findings. It appeared that the age of the participant was a moderate correlation between the age of the participant and attitudes toward mental illness. The older the participant's age, there appeared to be a moderate inverse correlation to attitude toward mental health. Language was also an additional factor in the current study. The study's finding suggests a moderate inverse correlation between English proficiency and mental health attitudes.
