Among the scientific community, gerontologists have generally not investigated LGBTQ issues, and researchers of LGBTQ topics have been incurious about aging. In recent years, the federal government provided funding for the first nationwide study of older LGBTQ adults, but the study's sample did not include any residents of Kentucky. The present survey sought to compensate for deficits in the extant research through an exploratory study on the wellbeing of the adult LGBTQ population in Kentucky and the contiguous states. A convenience sample of sexual and gender minority adults ranging in age from 18 to 85 completed the survey in online or paper form (n = 164). Older adults reported significantly lower levels of depression, anxiety, stress, loneliness, and closetedness---as well as higher self-esteem and perceptions of safety---than their younger counterparts. Lesbians indicated less loneliness than either bisexual, gay, or queer participants. Due to the sample size, effects proved small. Transgender respondents felt less safe; had lower self-esteem; and experienced more severe symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress than cisgender males or females. Due to the geographic concentration of participants, these results may be more indicative of residents of metropolitan areas. Nonmetropolitan LGBTQ older adults remain an under-studied and poorly understood population.
